FLECHAS Inc, announces the annual commemoration of the Abolition of Slavery in Puerto Rico (March 22, 1873).
The event will feature a number of speakers, entertainment, and exhibits. Among the featured guests are: Councilwoman Hilda Santiago of Meriden, speaking on the Abolition of Slavery in Puerto Rico and the significance of that today, and Ms. Rosalyn Diaz, an educator with the West Haven School System, who will present on the topic of the African roots in Puerto Rico, and Councilman Carlos Silva, Pres Pro-Tern, Bridgeport.
FLECHAS Inc, is a statewide cultural Puerto Rican organization based in New Haven founded by residents of Connecticut many of whom are natives from the township of Loíza, Puerto Rico; who migrated to the City during the 1960's. Loíza is one of the oldest towns in Puerto Rico and continues to be inhabited largely by descendents of the ex-enslaved Africans transported to the island during the transatlantic slave trade.
Recognized as the African Hub in Puerto Rico, the founders of FLECHAS brought with them their art, traditions, and cultural history to Connecticut to share and provide an additional venue to the community at large as a means to creating cultural awareness. The commemoration of the Abolition of Slavery is among one of the primary events in which the organization seeks to accomplish this goal. FLECHAS will be joined by members of the general public, and distinguished guests to remember this most important event in the history of the Island and its significance today.
